As you might know, Google currently has a collection of newspaper archives that’s worth knowing about. The following list represents Oregon newspapers that can be found online outside of the Oregon Digital Newspaper Program. The current information we have gathered concentrates primarily on titles available online up until 1923. In the long-term we hope to update the list to include historic titles beyond 1923. Please email us if you know of any additional titles available online that should be added to this list. Browse through several issues of your newspaper of interest to become familiar with the general layout of the paper and the terms used most often in your sections of interest. For example, if you’re looking for an obituary, did they commonly use the term “obituaries,” or “deaths” or “death notices,” etc. to head that section?
- Sometimes section headers were too fancy to be recognized by the OCR process, so also look for words frequently found in the general text then use that search term to look for content.
- Not sure why but for research even regular Google is getting worse and worse.
- See content of U.S. newspapers for an overview of what you may learn about a person or place.
- It’s not handy, but it works, and you can vary the date-range AND source to be what you want it to be.
- If Google appears to have newspapers from your month of interest but is missing a few particular issues here or there, then take time to view all pages of the available issues both before and after your target date.
From within this URL specific search, you can use Google’s search variables to narrow by date. Jon – It’s good to see you took an interest in my posting. What I would have found interesting is knowing if people wanted to take on this subject. I wasn’t expecting more but nice to see I spark your interest. At least if we did this challenge I will have the right year now. PS I like the extension Too Many Tabs suggested and as well Tabjump- both make searching more efficient so thanks for the recommendation CMoore.

In other words, setting the date limits filters the date ADDED, not the actual date of of the scanned newspaper article.
